Hønefossen / 2024

In Norway, I have drawn up a proposal for a new public space by the river Hønefossen. By establishing a new wooden deck, the area is tied together and unique vantage points and opportunities to stay close to the water are created. At the same time, a simple but effective lighting design ensures that the place is safe, interesting and attractive all year round for locals and tourists. The project was carried out in collaboration with industrial designer Michael Stabell.

The proposal for Hønefossen's attraction combines Nordic wood and light in an experience that can be enjoyed by everyone - all year round and around the clock. The project has been designed based on the beautiful landscape and the city's cultural history and allows visitors to experience the waterfall from all angles. An elegant wooden bridge with several viewing platforms leads visitors around the waterfall. The bridge's design is a tribute to the city's proud craft traditions, with details inspired by historical and functional elements that have shaped the city's current identity. Along the route you will encounter large wooden installations that function both as seating and information stands, and which tell about the history of the falls and the fascinating light design that comes to light in the dark. The user-friendly wooden elements, which are made from local types of wood, are designed with a unique faceted structure that makes them recognizable and harmonious in nature.

A programmed lighting design projects abstract images of water onto the raw stones, where the blue-green colors reflect both the cascading waterfall and the calm beauty of the Nordic light. The lighting fixtures that create movement and play of color are discreetly integrated under the bridge, so that they are only noticed when the beautiful light images conjure up. The project combines the power of nature with the city's culture and creates a new, fascinating attraction for Hønefoss.

The proposal's impressive wooden construction creates a unique experience all year round. When the waterfall is empty of water, a spectacular light show will quickly set the stage in the winter months, while in the summer the wooden bridges act as a natural extension of the park, perfect for relaxing walks and educational information. When darkness falls, the light show can be enjoyed in all its glory with the dramatic mountain structures as a backdrop.
